Murray Bridge gains from China’s new beef export approvals

China has approved eight new Australian beef export facilities, including Thomas Foods International’s meatworks near Murray Bridge.

China has granted new beef export access to eight Australian facilities, including Thomas Foods International’s meatworks near Murray Bridge.

The approvals were posted by China’s customs authority and include two abattoirs and six cold stores, opening the door to fresh export activity only months after Beijing introduced measures to protect its domestic cattle industry.

For South Australia, this is a practical regional business story with real supply-chain implications. It strengthens the export position of a major processor and gives Murray Bridge a direct place in a nationally important trade development.

It also matters because market access is rarely static. Trade conditions can tighten quickly, and when they ease, processors that secure approvals early are often best placed to move first. That makes this a useful signal for agriculture, logistics and regional employment.

Resilience Lens:

For South Australia, this is a meaningful regional trade and industry story, not a generic international update. It improves export optionality for a major processor and the ability to support local logistics, producer confidence and regional employment if volumes build.
