A new three-year partnership keeps Gather Round in South Australia until at least 2029, giving the State a longer planning horizon for tourism, hospitality, accommodation, transport and regional activation.
Gather Round will remain in South Australia until at least 2029, after the AFL and the South Australian Government confirmed a new three-year extension.
The State Government says the deal secures Gather Round in South Australia for a further three years and follows strong economic and visitor outcomes from previous events. The official release says the 2026 Gather Round attracted more than 270,000 fans, while the 2023, 2024 and 2025 Gather Rounds generated more than $285 million in combined economic impact and attracted more than 132,000 interstate visitors. ABC News has also reported that the event will stay in South Australia until 2029, with the 2027 Gather Round to include a player parade and dates to be confirmed in coming months.
For C4R - CENTRE FOR RESILIENCE, this is more than a sporting announcement. It is a visitor-economy resilience story.
Major events now function as economic infrastructure. They create predictable demand for hotels, restaurants, bars, transport, aviation, retail, security, event suppliers, temporary labour, local councils, regional venues and tourism operators. They also allow businesses to plan staffing, stock, pricing, accommodation packages and related experiences with more certainty.
This matters for South Australia because the State has been actively positioning itself as a national events capital. Gather Round now joins the broader event ecosystem that supports Adelaide’s brand, interstate visitation, regional dispersal and CBD activation.
The resilience opportunity is to move beyond match-day attendance and build a broader economic platform. That means connecting Gather Round to food and wine, accommodation, regional day trips, airport access, public transport, precinct programming, local producers and hospitality packages. If done well, the event can support both metropolitan Adelaide and regional South Australia.
There are still governance considerations. The full taxpayer cost of major event attraction is often commercially sensitive, and public benefit should continue to be assessed through transparent economic, community and regional outcomes where possible. But the strategic direction is clear: South Australia is using major events as part of its economic resilience architecture.
The next test is whether the State can turn the 2029 certainty into stronger forward planning for venues, accommodation, transport, tourism packaging and regional activation.
Resilience Lens:
Gather Round strengthens South Australia’s visitor-economy resilience by creating predictable demand across hospitality, accommodation, transport, retail, tourism and regional venues. The resilience opportunity is to convert a major sporting event into a broader economic platform that supports precinct activation, regional dispersal and long-term destination branding.
